Contracts
The MEBA has the best contracts and the best work rules in the industry. These are hard fought gains of former members that must not be taken for granted. This is why we have maintained business class flights and required PRE jobs for all our major West Coast employers throughout my 7 years as the EVP. The employers always want to take away our rights--particularly when we have something that they themselves don't get--and we must resist these calls for change.
There is a place for modernization and company relations, but respect is a two-way street; most smart companies can ultimately get behind proposals that are good for everyone while maintaining appropriate respect for the work we do. With STCW and regulatory requirements, we are all tasked with doing more with less. We must ensure the contracts protect our rights to a fair job, in a safe environment, and to be treated with the respect our work deserves. With the assistance of rank and file, and other union officials, I have delivered on that mandate and successfully negotiated many beneficial contracts as EVP.
